Tree Board
2012- It was a great year for Royalton. The City received a grant from the Department of Natural Resources for nine ball and burlap trees which were planted by volunteers at the Elementary School playground. We also completed a 2-year study of trees in our community. A total of 1,703 trees were inventoried in 27 city blocks with technical support provided by the University of Minnesota’s Department of Forest Resources.
2013- A gravel bed tree nursery was built. In the spring, 15 bare rooted trees were placed in the gravel bed and then in the fall, they are removed from the bed and then planted throughout the community. Placing the trees in the gravel bed over the summer allows the roots to develop, thereby increasing the survivability of the trees.
In 2015-the Royalton Tree Board has continued to put trees into the gravel bed nursery. They have also worked on Memorial Park and the trail that runs through the McGonagal park along the Platte River. They have also done a yearly inventory of the dead or diseased trees throughout the city.
Look for us throughout the city either working on our next gravel bed planting or out caring for our urban forest. If you would be interested in helping out our volunteer Tree Board, please feel free to contact City Hall.
What a grand year as we celebrate 27 years of being Tree City USA!!!.
